How to Help A Friend Going Through A Breakup

I’m terrible at breakups and they take me FOREVER to get over them! If you have a friend going through a breakup, here’s ways to help your friend, according to a therapist:
  1. Limit the breakup banter.  Let your friend know that you heard what they said, and you are thinking about the impact, and trying to sort it out so you can help them and be supportive.
  2. Do something to distract them. Research has revealed that distraction is the best approach for getting over a ex.
  3. Suggest therapy when necessary. Sometimes, a breakup is so intense that they may require more support beyond friends.
  4. Discourage self-destructive behavior. Don’t be scared to discourage self-destructive behavior (i.e. drunk texting their ex, stalking their ex’s social media account.) The expert advises asking point blank: “Why do you want to do this? What benefit will you get out of it? How will this help your situation?”
