The Most Popular Slang Terms of 2021…

A new study looked at the most popular slang terms in 2021.  Meaning words kid use, but they’re widespread enough that their parents could use them in a sentence too.  So, if you know what they mean, you’re not THAT old yet.

The ten most popular slang terms in 2021 are:  Ghosted . . . salty . . . on point . . . woke . . . GOAT . . . extra . . . low-key . . . catfish . . . savage . . . and thirsty.  Here are some more stats from the survey . . .

1.  Half of Americans admit they’ve used a slang term without knowing what it meant.  83% of us have had to google a word . . . and 68% have had to ask a young person.

2.  Parents are more likely to be annoyed by slang . . . 66% find it annoying sometimes.  But they’re also more likely to USE current slang terms.

3.  The top pandemic slang terms we know are:  ‘Rona . . . jab . . . quarantine and chill . . . quaranTEAM . . . covidiot . . . quarantini . . . Zoom fatigue . . . Zoombombing . . . before times . . . and Zoomer, which is someone who grew up during covid.

4.  The #1 slang term we’re SICK of hearing is . . . “OK boomer.”  The rest of the top slang terms that annoy us now are:  Bae . . . bye, Felicia . . . on fleek . . . woke . . . mansplain . . . zazzy . . . YAAAAS . . . and yeet.

The study also broke it down by generations:  Boomers love the word “woke,” but hate “mansplain” . . . Gen Xers love “ghosted,” and hate “bae” . . . Millennials like “salty,” but don’t like “bye, Felicia” . . . and Gen Zers love to say “low-key,” but also think it’s time to say “bye, Felicia” to the term “bye, Felicia.”
