The Shreveport Connection To The Movie “Titanic”

“Titanic” is a classic — remember when it came out in theaters and it was almost a game to see who had seen it in the movie theater the most? The iconic 1997 romantic film loosely based on the “Titanic” disaster will reappear in theaters across the country next month. Did you know the highest grossing movie of all time has a connection to the ArkLaTex – specifically the Shreveport-Bossier area? In fact a Shreveport native almost appeared as JACK in the movie!

Jack Dawson went on to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio – we all associate Leo with the movie. But, did you know that producers originally wanted Shreveport native Jared Leto for the movie?? Jared Leto was born in Bossier City and left the Shreveport, Louisiana area at an early age moving all over the country, but, this Hollywood star still has connections to the ArkLaTex.

Producer James Cameron allegedly was interested in Jared Leto for the staring role of Jack Dawson, but, Jared Leto refused to audition. I wonder if he regrets not auditioning. Can you imaging Jared Leto as Jack instead of Leonardo DiCaprio??

Planning for the 1997 movie started in the early 1990’s and producers originally wanted River Phoenix to play Jack. Unfortunately, River passed away in 1993By the way. Other actors who were considered include Matthew McConaughey, Chris O’Donnell – even Tom Cruise was considered for the role.
